'Back to my roots…' terrible title I know. I took this old hollowed tree trunk many years ago when I was just getting back into film having been previously lured away by the digital revolution. The shot was taken in Pembrokeshire on one of my first films using medium format – I was using an old 1950’s Rolleiflex TLR camera that I’d bought secondhand from Jessops for the princely sum of £70. This is the first time I’ve printed this image, I wanted something a bit different for the gallery, and quite splendid it looks too.

Nature before reconstruction – this was a test shot that I took whilst experimenting with the layout of the grasses. This particular composition didn't actually make it to the next stage of the work, the grasses were used in the much more regimented piece that turned into 'Reconstructed Nature I'

The Reconstructed Nature project limps on… I was thinking of some different sorts of support and this came to me after a crossword clue about Gulliver's Travels (it was the only clue I could answer…). I wasn't sure about this one initially, it looked a bit stark and so I tried adding a couple of additional pieces either side but it was very fiddly and I left it for another day in the end. However, this one does appeal to me more now because of the simplicity.

These random compositions were formed by repeatedly throwing down six offcuts of card. I was reminded of a family game I played as a child where you had to extract individual wooden sticks from a pile of sticks without moving any of the others. Anyway, that aside, I do like a bit of serendipity and quite happily spent 20 minutes or so shooting about 30 of these. Then, in the spirit of randomness, screen grabbed these 16 from the grid view in Lightroom to form a collective composition.

I’ve been experimenting with alternative supports for subjects within my ‘Reconstructed Nature’ project, moving away from tape to bulldog/binder clips on wire. I’ve drilled some wooden blocks so that wire can be threaded through and held upright – the same sort of construction I used for my ‘Uninvited guests’ project but in this case deliberately showing the supporting mechanism.

As the studios are presently locked down to the public I’ve only been up once this week; instead being tied to my office desk with some pretty mundane design work. On a positive note though, some of my images are now available for purchase on the Bevere Gallery website. The ‘Reconstructed nature’ project which I’m currently in the midst of has been in my mind for some time it would seem. I started shooting plants indoors as part of my ‘Uninvited guests’ project and for those images I used wire and bulldog clips to hold the plants in position in front of a window.

This shot of forsythia was taken much later and the shoots were taped to hold them in position, on paper I think. The colour version was the original shot but for some reason I shot the monochrome picture, with the tape, two days later. And then, like most pictures, did nothing with it for two years until I posted it on Instagram as part of another project. I replicated the idea with some daisies earlier this year and look where we are now! Some ideas just need time to ferment I guess, or in this case, I think having the time and the place to experiment and push the concept further has really helped it develop into a proper project.

'Reconstructed Nature V' which has a working title of 'flow' – it just seems to have a movement dynamic to it somehow. I'm liking the odd green, slightly less dead pine needle, strategically placed of course, and also how the tape has formed almost concentric circles around the upper centre focus point, which was totally unintentional.

I thought I'd try a bit of paint throwing after I'd finished photographing Reconstructed Nature III – it looked like it needed a bit of colour added to it. Let's just say that wasn't completely successful but once dried there were a few abstract macro shots to be had. This one was with my iPhone and a close-up lens attachment that I was playing with before I got started. The lens attachment blurs the image quite dramatically once away from the centre but there's something about the angle and the colours in this shot, along with that small crater towards that middle that somehow works.

A second 'taped down' composition on the window with flying sycamore seeds – all natural although it is a 'stacked' photo from eight stills taken from the same throw of the seeds. The piece was taped upside down on the window as the leaves and stems were held just at the base; so the seeds are actually floating upwards…

Posted @withregram • @cherriemansfieldartist The joy of colour. Today five bespoke artworks that I created with @richardnicholls.uk were unveiled at one of Worcester's most striking buildings, the former Hop Market Hotel on Foregate Street.

Along with seven other artists, we were commissioned by @myworcester @severnarts and Worcester BID to create bespoke designs for vacant shop windows in the city centre to form an outdoor gallery for residents and visitors to enjoy.

This piece has grown far beyond what I envisaged when I started out, but in a good way. The original composition was intentionally minimalistic with the straight grasses. As well as this full image, I took a number of shots of the details – the lines and the tape, to make some quite abstract images.

The second layer was added to break up some of the lines of the grasses with some less regimented elements but I felt that it then needed a foreground. That was introduced first thing today having harvested some more material from the garden and the compost bin which we share with my neighbour who is a keen gardener — there are often interesting bits of pruning to be found…

I like the introduction of the yellow-green palette, I think it adds another dimension to the image and makes it more pictorial but I am still drawn to the simplicity of the first version of the work.

A day of photography at the studio today. Just the one visitor so I spent a couple of uninterrupted hours just immersed in the process. Music on loud, the shuffle sequence was perfect, might even have broken out in song at one point… (definitely need to be alone for that!) The light was shifting constantly between the showers, I was shooting some strands of ornamental grasses which I’d taped in position onto a thin sheet of paper which in turn was taped onto the window. It’s a long time since I’ve had the luxury to really explore a subject whilst actually shooting. I usually have a pre-conceived idea of the shot I’m after and that is usually achieved pretty quickly, and it either works or it doesn’t. However it’s only when you carry on shooting and the obvious shots are exhausted, that the experimentation kicks in and that’s when you sometimes stumble across something great, that wasn’t obvious, wasn’t pre-conceived. And that’s what I love about photography; in spite of all the preparation sometimes everything comes together completely by accident.

I've had quite a lot of Polaroid pictures up in the gallery since we opened as I had them already framed up from open studios last year. However, it's not something I've worked on for a while and so I've been framing up some of my acrylic abstracts instead. I started doing these during lockdown as part of the #30works30days challenge and as well as displaying some of the originals, they're also a good source of close-up and macro images, four of which are displayed here.

this is my ideas wall, some work in progress, some work being contemplated, some freshly printed. I saw a quote the other day about an image not becoming a photograph until it's printed — annoyingly I can't find it now — but it is so true, seeing a physical print in different light and on repeated occasions gives it so much more value and meaning than viewing an image on a screen. So come and visit in real life for extra value and meaning… 🙂

today in the studio… I’m now using one shelf in the gallery for ongoing project work to display works in progress and to give a sense of how I make pictures. Returning visitors will be able to see different aspects of the work and how things progress over time. Sure, there’s a place for aesthetically pleasing images but the interesting stuff is what happens as part of the process, not necessarily the final image. Now I just need to convince the rest of the world to see it that way…

Our old friend Bollnow, whom we’ve banged on about before, theorised that our homes are a protective space away from the ‘external chaos’ of the outside world. Lockdown has forced us to spend time at home, in protection. In this new project we each look at our own ‘protective space’ in an observational way, seeking out and noticing the little things, the ordinary and the everyday scenes that make up our homes. The images are deliberately quiet and contemplative; an antithesis to the constant barrage of news, social media and influencer messaging that forms the external chaos of the outside world.
