I thought quite a lot about serendipity recently when I rewrote my About page, and how when it happens it gives the project I’m working on a real boost. These two pieces came together quite by chance yesterday and I absolutely love them, particularly the lighter grey/blue one. They’re acrylic ink on paper, and really just an extension of the doodling I was doing a few weeks back. Inspiration for the mark making has come from @stellauntalan.art an artist based in Philadelphia who I came across online. Her process is all about the mark and the material upon which it is made. I’m using the backgound image shapes to determine how I apply my marks. At the moment the vertical stripes are still very much in evidence, and that feels right but who knows where it might go next.

I”ve been after a small easy chair to go in the studio for a while and this little beauty was outside the second-hand furniture place when I walked past with the dog yesterday morning. It fits perfectly where the more upright (and no doubt better for my posture) chair used to go, but lounging is so much better for the thought process I find.

'projection' – a series of four panels depicting the projected rise in global temperature.

Paper on acrylic on board, each approx 6x8in on bevel cut recycled plywood. Each panel represents a 50 year timespan starting from 1900.

Based on the graph produced by @univofmaryland using figures from Multiple Global Circulation Models (GCMs) with a range from 1900 to 2100. The Models are developed independently in six different countries and predict between 2º and 5ºC degrees warming over the next 100 years.

This is a close up detail of the piece I was working on over #worcestershireopenstudios at the weekend. The board was salvaged from the packing crate that our new gazebo was shipped in, only it's a bit rougher than the OSB I normally use, as you can see… I quite like the effect though, it certainly adds another dimension.

'meta' – work in progress. I’ve been thinking about this one for a while, and unusually had the title before I started. Same technique as usual but the original sliced material is actually a close up photograph of a previously made stripey artwork, hence the title. The photo was destined as an editioned print but when printed at a decent size it wasn’t sharp enough to pass quality control so it’s been sat on the side for a while. I’m glad it works in its new form. See the finished piece at #worcestershireopenstudios this weekend.⁠

When it's fine at the studio we're able to throw open the doors (temperature withstanding), put out pictures and wheel out the greetings card carousel. However, if it starts to rain it's a mad dash to get everything in. We're having a veranda style cover built over the decking in front of the studios starting this week. It'll have a transparent roof which will make us a bit more weatherproof and is sure to make a big difference to the place.⁠

Another new piece on the go. I'm trying out double width strips, these are about 10mm wide, cut into sections and shifted slightly. So, on the right we have the colour scheme (with some strips of iridescent bling mingled in…) then the work in progress piece shows the first two rows in place with the second row shifted one place to the right. I'm thinking that the next row shifts back left to bring the strips back into line, then we'll see where it goes… ⁠
⁠I'm already liking the random patterns that are appearing where colour flows between the verticals where the same strip overlaps and also those distinct boundaries where the strip falls short. I do love a bit of serendipity 😄 ⁠

The new piece is moving on and today—after what seems like an age of cutting strips and re-arranging them, painting some new abstracts as source material, and prepping the board—I've finally started sticking down. This one's going to have a thin black wedge using Stewart Semple's Black 1.0 powder paint, as can be seen. It might have two yet, we'll see how this right hand side comes together. The indigo blue has been replaced with a dark green (thank you @cherriemansfieldartist and @susanbirth for the feedback) which can just about be seen bottom right. All going to plan so far. ⁠

We've had a glorious few days up at the studio this last week, particularly in the afternoon when the sun comes around to the front of the building and streams in. This is a new stripey layout coming together although I'm not too sure about the indigo blue additions. Fellow artist @anneguest.artist and I collaborate on photography based projects together. In theory this is an ongoing process; in practice we usually cobble something together when there’s a deadline looming… In 2019 we were fortunate to have a body of work displayed in the Elysium Gallery as part of the @espyphotoaward and so with a new call on the horizon we have started work on a new series. ⁠

We’re looking at non-native plants and their importance as markers for us at the start of spring in the English garden. This is Forsythia, originally native to China and Korea, who knew? This is the first stage, we’re looking at producing stained cyanotype prints as the final presentation but plenty of experimentation to get through in the meantime.⁠

We’ve got some new poster frames up on the outside of the building. When we’re open we often hang work up outside but that’s obviously weather dependent – these should be a bit more hardy. It’s added publicity for each of us and we can swap over the contents on a regular basis to keep things interesting.⁠

I’ve just finished this diptych which, needless to say, has taken on a life of it’s own and turned out quite different to how it was envisaged. When the colour stripes are initially laid out I get an idea of how they work as a block of similar colour but when there’s a join, the two areas often interact in ways that aren’t apparent from the start.⁠
⁠
This pair started off the other way up and I was thinking about channels and funnels but the heavier red/blue works better on the base and so it becomes more pyramid or mountain-like. The jagged join looks like the ragged edge of a volcano to me and the ‘sky’ has pieces falling form it, hence the ‘Vent’ title.⁠

My new work involves slicing up abstract works and arranging the strips into another abstract form. This practice started off with old paintings that I did in the first lockdown mainly as part of the #30works30days project but now encompasses new works that I paint for specific colours or textures that I want to use. This one is 'blush' and recycles three crappy old pictures into one much more beautiful one 🙂 12x12in, acrylic on paper on board. More details on my website. ⁠

I’ve painted my gallery wall a light/mid grey (it says Turtle Dove on the tin, I couldn't get Battleship). The old wall was magnolia which is fairly bland; not white but not a shade of anything really. The wall needed patching having removed one shelf and then moved another, so I took the opportunity to change the colour to somethimg which I think shows off my work better, especially with white frames. It also photographs much better, the magnolia either looked off-white, or if I tried to brighten the image afterwards, it was a balancing act between getting the wall to look less creamy and over-exposing the artwork. At the studio for the first time in weeks getting things ready for opening again in, hopefully, ten days or so. My new artwork is too big to fit on anything but the top gallery ledge, so I’ve removed the middle one, shuffled the top one down so that will take larger pieces, and then added the now spare one into my studio. Not finished yet but here’s a sneak preview with the pieces I was using for sizing.⁠
